🍂 Why Fall in Colorado Is Pure Gold

Colorado’s mountains may have a history of gold rushes — but in the fall, the real treasure is the vibrant explosion of color across its forests, hillsides, and valleys. Aspen groves are especially magical. Connected by a shared root system, an entire grove is a single living organism. Because of that, aspens' leaves will change color at the same time and at the same rate, creating a breathtaking, golden wave across the landscape.

But aspens aren't the only stars of the show. Gamble oaks, cottonwoods, sumacs, and other shrubs dazzle with bold reds, oranges, and yellows. Pair that with evergreens and snowcapped mountains, and you have a view that feels like a Bob Ross painting come to life.

When traveling through Colorado in the fall, don’t just stick to the scenic byways—make time to stop in the local towns. I always make pit stops for food, snacks, fuel, and a dose of small-town charm. Some towns are tucked near major cities, while others are so remote that the locals include four-legged survivalists. Either way, you’ll find postcard-worthy photo ops and authentic Colorado character.

🐻 Fall Wildlife: Beauty and Caution

Autumn isn’t just about color — it’s also prime wildlife-watching season. As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, animals are busy preparing for winter. You might spot elk, deer, moose, foxes, mountain lions, or bears foraging and migrating. But remember:

• Never approach or feed wildlife
• Store food safely when camping or hiking
• Stay alert, especially at dusk and dawn

🐾 Be bear-aware!

If you encounter a bear, do not run, remain calm, and group together. Respecting wildlife ensures both your safety and theirs. The only time I've encountered a wild bear was at a public neighborhood park, with plenty of people around—and, it was in a tree. I'd rather not meet one on a trail, but if that ever happens, I'll be sure to report back (hopefully not from the ER).

Go outdoors and explore — especially before winter arrives. Enjoy the fall views and colors as much as you can because they don't last long. Take plenty of pictures, because while fall is fleeting, photos (and the memories behind them) are long-lasting.

The changing leaves are so breathtaking, they just might change you, too. You'll return to your routine feeling lighter, happier, and renewed — because nature has a way of healing us from deep within. Though it's pure surmise, I feel this to be true.

The real treasure isn't gold. It's the core memories that add vibrance and true value to our lives.
