My Journey Back to Photography

Updated: Nov 21, 2023

Welcome, Friends!

Hello, dear readers. I'm Kristin, your friendly photographer lady. I am based out of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and I am back in business. I'd like to introduce myself by opening up a little bit, but first, let's admire a warming winter photo. Winter photos are gorgeous. There snow doubt about it!

Ciara & Kameron | Winter wonderland in Hohenfels, Bavaria | Germany

Photography has been part of my life since Kodak's disposable point-and-shoots were cool to bring to parties several decades ago. It was a much simpler time before Smartphones were handy, because we didn't have the instant gratification of the perfect angle, the perfect lighting, the right moment, or the perfect timing without the option to delete and retake a hideous photo. Everything was calculated according to how big the camera roll was because there were only so many shots you could take before it ran out. The mystery of it all was so appealing because you never knew how the photos would turn out until you developed the camera roll at Walgreens (GASP! No negatives were harmed during the developing process at Walgreens). The anxious excitement of anticipation was strong and the emotional rollercoaster of seeing those pictures days or weeks later is how I fell in love with photography, and I love sharing that feeling with clients.

Fast forward a couple decades later and here we are. I have instant gratification AND control over the composition of my photos. What sorcery is this? It’s manual mode. I love taking pictures for the simple satisfaction of making people smile and I've been doing it professionally on and off for nearly a decade, but now with far better gear and more experience.

My husband is Active Duty Army and we've moved nearly every 3-5 years since we've met in 2006. We've built a beautiful life together but trying to juggle all the moves and the "new beginnings" on top of having children, attending college, training deployments and a global pandem...onium, I needed a break from photography; but I'm back, and life is beautiful. This journey is meant to go on.

We have two sons, Ryker and Axel. Ryker was born in Louisiana, and our youngest son, Axel, was born in Germany, and now we are settling down in Colorado, even though I am from Arizona and my husband is from Oklahoma. Stories like this are common in military families but because of it, we have a whole Army family all over the world, which is a blessing. Moving so often is difficult; however, it comes with many perks; one being that I've been able to take photographs in some of the most gorgeous places, including Colorful Colorado, and I look forward to building a client base here. Life moves faster than a camera's quickest shutter speed, but through the art of photography, we can slow down and relive the precious memories immortalized within our photographs. This is why we take pictures.

I studied environmental science in college, and I am a nature enthusiast galore. So, being outdoors and taking pictures makes my heart smile and I want to share that enthusiasm with the world. I am an “outdoor in natural-light” lifestyle photographer and my workflow is laid back. I observe my surroundings for the perfect framed photos, pops of color, and depth-of-field. I value your vision, your ideas, and your story and I want to tell it through your photos, no matter the season, the rhyme or the reason. Speaking of seasons... Winter is here. If you’re brave enough to embrace the winter elements, I applaud you! Because “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”

Follow my Facebook photography page at https://www.facebook.com/KristinMaePhotography to stay informed on session minis and more. I am considering offering in-home sessions for clients since it’s cold outside. If this is something you’d be interested in, please reach out to me. I am here for all your (family friendly) photoshoot inquiries, indoors and outdoors, so, don’t be shy. As of right now, I am officially in business! Thank you for reading my first blog post and if you have any suggestions on future posts, collaboration work, or photoshoot questions, please shoot me a message because I’d love to hear from you.
